Well what do we have here, another yacht from a luxury automaker? You may be wondering what others have come about and there in fact have been a few. Lamborghini and Audi, to name a few, have dived into the yacht market before. Whether or not these yachts sell is yet to be easily determined, but let’s look at Mercedes’ new attempt at floating supremacy, a 46-foot yacht dubbed “Granturismo.” A clear challenge for this type of endeavor is translating an automotive design scheme into a boating design. In this case Mercedes seems to have done a pretty good job. The nipped rear is somewhat reminiscent of the CLS, and is accompanied appropriately by the upward-arching accent line also evident on the CLS and becoming more widespread among Benzo’s automotive line-up. The closed nature of this yacht in its natural state is very much reminiscent of an automobile, though other sketches show ample room for natural light exposure, probably on demand from an electronically controlled roof. Overall, this is definitely a fun exercise and a challenge that we commend Mercedes for tackling. It is due to appear at the 2013 Monaco Yacht Show. Co-developed with Silver Arrow Marine, the “Granturismo” is to hit the production line next year.
