Italian Automaker ATS Coming Back

Posted October 10, 2012 By Sia & filed under Uncategorized

Not too long ago we posed our fans with the question of which failed exotic automaker they wish would come back.  Well, the obscure Italian ATS (Automobili Turismo e Sport) brand has been resurrected, and with a very interesting preliminary model lineup.  First of all, ATS hasn’t been active for nearly 50 years, with its last success (let alone any product) being the 2500 GT from 1962 to 1964, with a mere 12 examples having been produced.  In addition, the small Italian automaker was first conceived by a group of disgruntled Ferrari employees after a disagreement with Enzo Ferrari.  So, what are they offering up now?  First up is a beautiful small exotic coupe that has strong Lotus cues with a hint of Ford GT.  Again called the 2500 GT, this exotic is said to hone a 500+ hp Subaru-derived flat-4 and weigh only 2.160 pounds; all of this is good for a supposed 3.3 second sprint to 60.  Alongside the 2500 GT is the Sport 1000, a track-focused machine powered by a motorcycle engine; many top motorcycle manufacturers are supposedly in discussion to provide power.  When all is said and done, it’s hard to say if ATS will grow or even survive in the increasingly competitive exotic auto market.  But, the brand surely offers up potential models that offer unique features and powerplants that might just provide enough differentiation and intrigue for survival.
