We documented the early visions of a benchmark recently, the 2014 Mercedes S-Class, and this time we’re looking at another automotive benchmark but with a much clearer view. The new, completely redesigned Range Rover has debuted in London and there are definitely more pros than cons. Similar to a car like the S-Class, Land Rover has done so well with the Range Rover that enthusiasts and consumers can count on another slam dunk with each new generation. For this round Range Rover has dropped around 700 pounds by utilizing a Jaguar-esque all-aluminum construction. Losing 700 pounds is a major feat and accomplishment and will undoubtedly affect this big dog in big ways, especially as an SUV. Higher fuel efficiency (U.S. stats not yet released) and dramatic performance are two noteworthy improvements. When fitted with the 510 HP supercharged V8 this SUV gets to 60 in an astonishing 5.1 seconds; standard fittings include a 375 HP V8. Interior appointments are expectedly beautiful and luxurious with the crazy option of a 29 speaker Meridian sound system. Styling follows the classic Range Rover floating roof aesthetic, but since when did Ford get into Range Rover’s design studio? We’ll have to see it in person, but some of the cues mimic that of the Ford Explorer a little too closely for comfort. Truly an evolution of the previous generation, this new Range Rover will frequent offroad obstacles and Beverly Hills pavement with a much lighter but always luxurious footprint.
