Man drives Rolls-Royce for 78 years then makes museum donation to ensure its preservation

Posted January 7, 2013 By Sia & filed under Uncategorized

A hard-working man by the name of Allen Swift passed away at the age of 102 in Masschussets back in 2005.  While this feat in and of itself is worthy of much respect, Mr. Swift is the person in the world credited with owning a Rolls-Royce longer than anyone else.  Back in 1928, Swift received a '28 Rolls-Royce Piccadilly P1 Roadster as a graduation gift from his father (gee it would be nice to get a Rolls upon graduation…).  Not only did Swift drive the car regularly but he also maintained it meticulously, eventually giving it a full body-off restoration and engine rebuild in 1988.  Back in 1994 Rolls-Royce presented him with a crystal Spirit of Ecstasy award for his dedicated ownership.  By the time of his death, Swift had accumulated 170,000 miles on the Roller left the Lyman & Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History a $1 million gift to display the car and exhibit the history of Rolls-Royce manufacturing in Springfield and the U.S.
