We recently posed the question to our social media fans: “Exotic Car brands expanding their lineups, Good or Bad?” To our mild surprise, the response was vast majority in support. After pondering on it, one can see how there is support for exotic brands expanding their lineups (more exotic cars!), but memory of bitter sentiment toward this sort of brand dilution could also make one expect that we’d get some nasty comments. So, in light of it all, McLaren is, well, expanding their lineup. Executive Chairman Ron Dennis confirmed an “entry-level” model dubbed ‘P13’ to fit in under the MP4-12c and compete against the likes of the Audi R8 and Porsche 911 Turbo. The car will utilize McLaren’s carbon-fiber “MonoCell” construction, also capable of convertible renditions, and will likely use a de-tuned version of the MP4’s 3.8 liter V8 with horsepower in the 500 range. McLaren is gunning for annual sales of up to 2,500 units for the P13 at pricing just below $200k. Expect the P13 to start making itself known within the next three years.
