AMG shoots down diesels, but Hybrids coming
We’ve seen hybrid technology successfully implant itself into the performance car arena, but it is interesting to hear from performance brands that have not quite embraced the drivetrain, whether or not they are fully opposed or open to the idea. One such house is AMG. Known for its torque-tastic V12 powerhouses, AMG currently seems to have an attitude of acceptance, acceptance that they are going to have to include hybrid tech in their motors in the near future. Mercedes-AMG Chairman Ola Källenius told Edmunds that the division “will do the hybrid when the market is ready for it and in markets due to their regulations.” To be honest, that doesn’t sound like a very enthusiastic response. AMG finds so much of its brand identity in its massively powerful gasoline engines that this sort of vanilla response is understandable. Also, legitimate concerns over issues like added battery weight and the like were also included in his response. In addition, AMG’s use of fuel-saving technology like start-stop functionality will buy it time for some years to come in regards to fuel standards, but we’re sure they’ll do just fine incorporating hybrids in their lineup. As for diesel, AMG wants nothing to do with it.
