Chinese automaker Great Wall aiming for U.S. sales by 2015
This news may not be very “exotic,” but it is most definitely an interesting development in the auto industry, particularly here in the U.S. In the states the ubiquitous ‘Made in China’ stamp often equates to low quality, but would you think the same if that stamp was on a car? Well, China’s Great Wall Motors may be the first volume Chinese automaker in the states by 2015. Great Wall’s President, Wang Fengying, noted, “We started planning to enter the U.S. market two years ago…We need to study its laws and regulations (on safety and emission) as well as consumer preferences.” When questioned if the cars could possibly be built in the U.S. he (not surprisingly) responded, “Since the United States is far away from China and its import tariffs on vehicles are not particularly high, we would prefer to build the vehicle locally.” Great Wall’s 35+ years in the industry may act in its favor, but will it be enough to enter the U.S. market and boost its 677k worldwide sales to its goal of 800k? By the way, the below X240 model looks an awful lot like the horribly unsuccessful Isuzu Axiom to us. Hmm…
