Now that the Maserati Ghibli has debuted in Shanghai, some more details have emerged regarding its underpinnings. Though the car shares many architectural similarities with the Chrysler 300 & Dodge Charger, its V8 option is not nailed down as the Ferrari-derived 3.8 liter found in the Quattroporte or a hemi mill from Chrysler. Currently, the car is offered with three 3.0 liter V6 options; 2 turbocharged gasoline and one diesel, the company’s first ever. The base V6 in the Ghibli (“jee-blee”) offers up 330 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque, good for a dash to 60 in 5.6 seconds. The more powerful V6 offers 410 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque, which drops the sprint to 60 down to 5 seconds. As for the diesel, 275 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque is produced, good for 0-60 in 6.3 seconds and 47 mpg (European cycle), as Maserati claims. The Ghibli competes directly with the BMW 5-Series, Audi A6 and the like. In addition, seeing as how this car is Maserati’s tool to dramatically increase output and sales, particularly in the U.S. and China, this could be one of the most important cars in their history. More to come!
