No manual transmission for next Porsche 911 Turbo

Posted May 2, 2013 By Sia & filed under Uncategorized

We knew the manual transmission has slowly but surely been phased out of all of our favorite brands, but its departure from the 911 Turbo (and soon enough the entire 911 series) really marks its demise.  But, when we first started commenting on the manual’s downfall years ago, it was with a largely somber tone.  When it comes down to it, though, should we really be that upset?  Sure, the raw driver involvement and control is truly unique to a manual, but its performance benefits and efficiency are quickly becoming significantly sub-par.  In fact, it’s been reported that the 991 Turbo will consume 13 percent less fuel than its predecessor, some of which is due to new programming that keeps the engine working near 1,000 rpm during low-speed conditions by using clutch slippage to approximate an appropriate gear ratio.  In addition, quicker shifts and greater driveability are other benefits, of course.

Also, here are some stats for the next Turbo for you to salivate over.  The standard Turbo will produce 520 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque while the Turbo S will crank 560 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque.  A powerful overboost mode will provide an additional 37 additional lb-ft for up to ten seconds; woohoo!  Along with that comes larger brakes which will surely be carbon ceramic and will come in at a huge 16.1 inches in front and 15.4 in back.  Also, a rubber tube along the bottom of the front spoiler will inflate and drop down for extra downforce. Count on a four-wheel steering system for added maneuverability.
