The speculation and spy shots can go by the wayside now that the 2014 S-Class is now revealed. This generation, dubbed by Mercedes as “the best automobile in the world,” is considerably more advanced stylistically and mechanically, and also more luxurious than the outgoing model. In addition, the car is longer and lighter than last generation, and has not one light bulb throughout the entire car, leaving all the work to LED’s. Safety features include items like Pre-Safe collision avoidance system, seatbelts that pull drivers and front passengers away from the direction of an impact on their own to reduce front collision injuries and a cushionbag that hides under the rear seat bench on reclining seat models to prevent passengers from sliding below the seatbelt in an accident. Interior features include Two 12.3-inch widescreen TFT displays, a touch-sensitive telephone keypad with 12 “freely selectable” memory “places,” a Burmester 3D surround sound system, and a navigation system featuring Google Maps and aircraft-style “Driveshow” with an animated compass. Oh, we forgot about the “active perfuming system” – switched on and off manually – which delivers a discreet, mild fragrance to keep the cabin fresh. Under hood the S550s use a 4.7-liter twin-turbocharged V8 rated at 455 horsepower and 516 lb-ft. of torque. Best part is, expect that torque to deliver from just 1,800 rpm up to 3,500 rpm. Expect a sprint to 60 in a mere 4.8 seconds. The new S-Class is bound for U.S. showrooms this Fall. More to come…
