McLaren announces new 650S to slot between our MP4-12C and the P1 hypercar
McLaren has had much success moving its technology, speed, and aesthetic from the race track to the showroom. When it comes to exotic cars and lifestyle, McLaren is stands out considerably. So far, McLaren manufactures the staple MP4-12C and the futureproof P1. Cue the Geneva Motor Show in March—Europe’s biggest debut hub for most luxury carmakers. McLaren is no different—the marque will unveil its newest model, the 650S, which will slot between the flagship MP4-12C and P1. Details are scarce, however we do know that McLaren is set up to compete with the Italian supercar brands across the pond. When it comes to the brand’s naming, enthusiasts have often complained of McLaren’s nomenclature system, since their car’s monikers follow no set trend and border the alphabet-soup trend. The only information McLaren revealed is a teaser shot with a name badge. Top Gear speculates that the car may be a more driver-oriented version of the production MP4-12C, albeit with styling changes as well as a drop in weight. This would make its zero to 60 time even more maddening than the MP4-12C—in theory. There is also speculation on where the car will slot in the model line—will this compete with the likes of Ferrari’s 458 Speciale? Or is this a publicity stunt to steal the spotlight from Lamborghini’s imminent Huracan? We will know within a few weeks time. Tide yourselves over with our very own orange McLaren MP4-12C rental in the meantime.
