McLaren & Honda Open to Road Car Collaboration
It’s always interesting to see how talents mix and match in the auto industry, and which brands decide to work together. New working relationships have been hot off the presses lately, namely with Aston Martin and AMG. This round we get news of a potential road car working relationship between McLaren and Honda. But why? Well, let’s not forget that Honda announced last year that it would be making a return to Formula 1 by supplying engines, starting with McLaren in 2015. So, if some rewarding positions are won during their initial time together, we could very well see the mechanical swap continue onto public roads. In fact, McLaren’s F1 team principal Martin Whitmarsh said to Autocar, “Nothing’s fixed, but we’re open to that and so are they.” But, how could this relationship materialize? Firstly, McLaren is small enough to where outsourcing parts is advantageous, so hardware like motors and gearboxes are a start. The relationship could very well go the other way as well, with McLaren technologies finding their way into the next Acura NSX. Either way, we wish McLaren and Honda a successful F1 relationship and would be very interested to see how it could extend within our reach.
