Tesla Model S scores 5-star crash safety rating – beats testing equipment
What a feat! It’s always an admirable feat when a car is able to achieve high safety ratings, but you can imagine we’re particularly happy when it involves a car in the Club Sportiva exotic car fleet. Power, styling, and technology are all attributes that we expect from today’s exotic cars, but exceptional safety is an added benefit. It’s kind of like, “have your exotic car and drive it too,” or “drive your exotic car and be completely safe too.” Tesla had claimed that the Model S scored 5.4 stars out of 5, making it the safest car ever tested by the NHTSA (and safer than the high-rated Volvo S60), but these claims are a bit ambitious. The NHTSA claims that, in the end, ratings fall strictly within their 5-star guidelines, and that no ranking is done within those star ratings. Regardless of this minor issue, there is something the NHTSA & Tesla can both agree on: the Model S scored a perfect 5 stars in every test. In fact, when the roof test hit 4 g’s the machine broke, but the Tesla didn’t. See what all of this strength feels like in our lightning fast Tesla Model S Performance Edition rental. But please, don’t attempt to test these ratings for yourself.
