2015 Porsche 918 Spyder is a Hot Rod of the Future

Posted January 29, 2014 By Sia & filed under Autos

Porsche’s latest supercar reveals itself as a gasoline-electric hybrid packing nearly 900 horsepower, a true masterpiece of sophisticated engineering, eye-catching design, and pure speed manifested as one of the quickest cars of our time.  Stuttgart’s 918 Spyder was incepted in concept form for at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, however Porsche upgraded even more specs since the debut of the 700-horsepower hybrid showcar.  The 918 Spyder combines a total of three engines (one gasoline, two electric) to produce 887-horsepower and 940 mind-blowing pound-feet of torque.  All-wheel drive propels this mid-engine beast from zero to 60 in 2.5 seconds, just enough time to catch your breath.  The hybrid Porsche can be driven in five modes via a push-button rotary knob—specific to either electric, gas-electric hybrid, or even a race-oriented hot lap mode to give you extra push and shove.  The interior is a plethora of black leather and carbon fiber, harmonizing sheer size and stance with an agile feel from behind the wheel.  At a glance the 918 can be compared with the newest hybrid supercars—think Ferrari LaFerrari, Lambo Veneno, or McLaren P1—however Porsche has dedicated a range-topping sports car to pave the way for its future models for the last sixty years.  The closest cousin to the 918 is the all-wheel-drive, Kevlar-bodied 1985 Porsche 959.  We consider the Porsche 918 Spyder the future of the German sports car—in your hands today.
