If you’ve ever wanted a turbo charged Porsche, wait until the next iteration to purchase one for roughly half the price. However, the rear may only contain the Carrera emblem, as all 911 models, with the exception of the GT3, will be turbocharged. Purists may aghast at this notion and cite tradition as the primary reason to be appalled, but normally aspirated motors aren’t as viable as they once were.
With stringent emission standards in Europe and the United States, as well as Porsche’s own initiatives to pursue more sustainable and efficient products, the only way to remain viable is to turbo charge. Porsche’s chief engineer, Wolfgang Hatz also mentioned the economics as well stating that “You can’t afford to keep an engine for 10 years any more.” With electrification and performance becoming synonymous (think Tesla P85D), Porsche will need compete against a new breed of drivelines, which is why their current racing programs and halo car, the Porsche 918, are vital.
There is a silver lining for purists though. Hatz assured the press at the Detroit Auto show that all 911 models will continue to be powered by a flat 6 motor. If anyone can mix tradition with progression, it is definitely the guys at Stuttgart.
