One of the biggest safety concerns every motorist has on the road is being aware of bicycles and motorbikes. Jaguar Land Rover has taken strides to prevent incidents with our two wheel friends, by introducing a clever technical solution called Bike Sense.
The primary reason for accidents is due to the lack of blind spot awareness, whether the vehicle is in motion or is stationary. Bike Sense addresses both with a clever use of radar. While the vehicle is in motion the system can detect the rate of speed and direction of a bicycle and motorbike moving towards the vehicle, providing visual and audio cues to help the driver make an informed decision. The system is also sophisticated enough to not provide false alarms for cars that are approaching. Furthermore, if a bicycle is approaching the stationary vehicle, the doors to the vehicle will temporarily lock to prevent you from opening the door into an incoming cycling.
What is interesting about this technology is the empowerment it provides the driver to make the right decision. This is an exponential improvement in safety, considering that vehicle design has not changed substantially over the course of a century when it comes to removing blind spots. What makes it more remarkable is that self-driving cars will utilize this tech to create safer and more remarkable transportation.
