Speedhunters author Larry Chen visited the 2015 Tokyo Auto Salon to see what this year’s Japanese aftermarket tuning sector had to offer. If you haven’t heard about this event, think of it as a there SEMA, where manufacturers and shops bring their highly tuned vehicles to display new products, craftsmanship, and creativity.
One of the most interesting cars in this years show are the NB Mazda’s converted into a Lamborghini Miura and a Toyota 2000GT. Both renditions were executed amazingly and offer a compelling case to emulate. Let’s just say these cars aren’t Fiero conversions. The proportions and attention to detail makes them hard to decipher next to their real counterparts. Better yet, they cost a fraction of the real things, which only makes them more desirable.
Another interesting vehicle is the KPGC110 Skyline from Rocky Auto. Externally, the car is tastefully modified, and is appealing nonetheless. However, Rocky Auto doesn’t settle for mediocre. Under the skin of their GTR is actually an R32 Skyline drivetrain, complete with a RB26DETT and 4WD. When you place that in the equation, the car is not just a design centerpiece, but also an engineering marvel.
