The Mercedes-Benz G500 4×4² Off-Road Review (Video)
It starts with the view of an extremely muddy G500 4×4 letting out a rev from it’s new 4.0 Liter BiTurbo V8 through the side mounted exhausts. It stands so tall and looks so beefy that it seems ready to go right into battle. The glossy white paint however says, “How about a classy dinner downtown?” The trunk could easily fit a Mazda Miata. If that’s not enough, it will engulf you in the most luxurious of leather stitching patterns and carbon fiber bits all around. The 4×4 has 17 inches of clearance and dwarfs the regular G-Wagon. With a comfort mode option, it can drive around town as casually as any other Mercedes is. except for the fact it can run over small buildings. That’s because the 4×4’s naturalIt seems to handle pretty well through the mountains due to it’s very wide track. On the front, below the headlights and above the windshield are beautiful, thin LED light bars used as daytime running lights. The car is pretty, big and useful on the streets.
But what it does off-road in this video makes it seem like a master of the Earth. Running up and down mountains with ease. The height clearance alone makes it capable of climbing onto large rocks and stepping up over plateaus. The 420 horsepower is delivered to all 4 wheels, all the time through the seven speed G-tronic gearbox. The three mechanical differential locks can be controlled at the push of a button while driving. The foot and a half of ground clearance definitely helps, especially when running through mud and excessively large puddles.
The steering is hydraulically operated which makes the 500 seem very light in terms of steering. You can see the driver in the video easily maneuvering the truck with just one hand.
