The SLS AMG was produced from 2010 through 2015 and it was one of our favorite luxury muscle cars. A high end, German version of the SRT Viper as we see it. For 2016, AMG has created the AMG GT and GT S, built from the ground up to compete with the likes of the Porsche 911 and Audi R8.
The new AMG GT might not have the iconic gullwing doors, but it does have a 4.0 liter Bi-Turbo V8 that sounds delightful and puts out a massive 503 horsepower and 479 lbs/ft of torque. That horsepower is easy to control and even comfortable enough to daily drive. 0-62 comes in at 3.8 seconds, almost a second slower than our Tesla P85D, however the top speed is much higher at 193mph. AMG integrated the turbos into the cylinders of the “V” to manage heat more effectively and clean up the engine bay space.
Looks are a killer point on the GT. Every angle either gives off an aggressive emotion like a wild tiger or a stunning elegant architectural piece. The front of the car looks reminiscent of our Maserati GranTurismo MC with the front splitter piece, and the interior might make you feel like you’re in an S-Class super sedan. The car handles very well but doesn’t give a whole ton of feedback to the driver, through the wheel. Visibility isn’t great due to the long hood and thick A pillars, just as in the SLS or SRT Viper.
Our ears were extremely pleased with the SLS AMG, warm it up, rev it up and there are few better sounds in the world, and thankfully the turbos on the AMG GT don’t ruin the exhaust note. Hollywood studios could use the revving of the AMG GT S for war sound effects. The crackle and pop of the exhaust is violent and energizing!
